Vikram Rathi grew up training in his uncle's mitti akhara outside Sonipat — bricks for plates, neem-tree pull-ups, hour-long warm-ups before anyone touched a weight. He represented Haryana in powerlifting through college, NSNIS-certified in 2012, and spent six years coaching at three Delhi gyms before he got tired of watching good lifters get injured by bad programming.

Akhara Strength opened in 2014 in a basement in Lajpat Nagar with twelve founding members — half of them his old college lifting friends. We moved to our current 14,000 sq ft Saket facility in 2018. The discipline is Indian. The programming is global. Both are non-negotiable.

PT at Akhara is not "watch the trainer demonstrate while you guess". Every session begins with movement check, ends with a written log, and contributes to a periodised programme the coach builds for you.

The honest answers.

I have never lifted before. Will I be lost?
No. Every new member spends their first session with Coach Meera (DPT physiotherapist) for a 45-minute movement screen, and is funnelled into the Beginners Strength block — a 4-week barbell-fundamentals progression that runs Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat. You will not touch a heavy weight in the first 2 weeks. By week 6 you will be squatting and deadlifting with form most experienced lifters do not have.
Do I need to commit to a long-term plan?
No. Drop-in is ₹400 a day, monthly is ₹2,400 with no commitment. Long-term plans (6-month, Annual) are discounted because you save us monthly admin work, not because we are locking you in. Cancel any plan up to renewal with no penalty.
Is the gym crowded at peak hours?
Mornings 7–9 AM and evenings 6–9 PM are busy. We cap class sizes at 12 and we have 14,000 sq ft of open floor — you will never wait for a rack. Annual + 6-month members get peak-hour priority booking on classes. Off-peak (10 AM – 5 PM, late night 9–11 PM) is calm.
Do you allow children, or families?
Members aged 16+ only on the main floor (parental consent + waiver required for 16–17). Family memberships not currently offered. We refer juniors to KidsFit, our partner youth-fitness studio one block over.
What's your policy on supplements / steroids?
Supplements (whey, creatine, electrolytes) are sold at the front desk at MRP. Anabolic steroids and prohormones are explicitly not welcome — we have refused membership renewals over this. You will not be tested, but if a coach observes signs of unsupervised use you will be referred to our partner endocrinologist or asked to leave.
Do you have a dietitian or nutritionist?
Not in-house. We refer to two Delhi-based RDs we trust — Dr. Snehal Pandey and Sahir Bhalla. Standalone consultation ₹2,500–₹4,500 with them, separate from Akhara membership. We do not sell "diet plans" because most of them in this industry are not made by qualified RDs.
Can I freeze my membership during travel?
Annual members: pause up to 14 days/year for travel, applied automatically when you flag it via the app. 6-month members: pause up to 7 days/year. Monthly: no pause (just don't renew that month). Medical pause for surgery/injury is unlimited with a doctor's note.
Is there parking?
Free covered parking for 30 cars + 60 two-wheelers. Saket metro Gate 1 is a 4-minute walk. Late-night security on duty 10 PM – 6 AM.
